OH, FINALLY, THE WEEKEND
1. Margaret Atwood reviews Kazuo Ishiguro's new novel.
2. The "genius of Sin City".
3. Foreign film of the day: Don't Move.
4. Are these REM's best songs?
5. Next week's Economist cover package examines how the Internet has empowered consumers. Even though plenty of people still shop at stores, a study found that "more than 90 percent of people aged between 18 and 54" used online research to decide what to buy. Because young people spend so much time on the Internet, incentive-based advertising (like Google's Gmail) and brand showrooms (like the Apple Store) are flourishing. "[The showrooms'] main role is to demonstrate a range of the company's products, with knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff on hand who are under no pressure to clinch a sale. Where people actually buy the product in the end becomes of secondary importance."
6. Diversity, blogs, white guys, Heather MacDonald.
7. My friend Steve is bringing M-One-11 to Canada next month.
8. Macleans looks at Terry Fox.
